Madeline Kalda is known in the SKULE community for holding more grudges than positions. She has contributed to a wide variety of community events over the years, including Eisenguard 2T4, the Dye Subcommittee (twice), unmentionables, and several weenings in the 2024-25 school year. She is a welder, machinist and notable exclusion from the BFC, but above all a Friend Of EngSoc.

Dye Subcommittee[edit | edit source]

Maddie with her Co-Chair Arshia Singh after Dye 2T4.

Madeline first served as the Dye Subcommittee Chair in 2020 alongside Gehna Karani. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Subcommittee shipped small pots of dye to frosh and ran a livestream explaining the tradition from Dye Alley. They also created a report to investigate purple dye options beyond Gentian Violet, which had just been banned by the Government of Canada.

In 2024, she reprised her role alongside Arshia Singh. Together they ran the full-body dunk tank for the first time since 2018 after receiving approval for a mix of Brilliant Blue 1, Red 28, chlorine, and water. This marked the first time chlorine had been used in the dunk tank, and resulted in the cheapest event since the pandemic. After the school year had concluded, she was invited to partake in a conference alongside the EHS team to discuss the collaboration between the Dye Subcommittee and the administration; however, funding could not be allocated due to rising tensions for Canadians along the US border.

Student Governance[edit | edit source]

Madeline was an Executive Assistant at the University of Toronto Students' Union over the 2021-22 school year, where she researched the Policy on Sexual Violence & Sexual Harassment and the University-Mandated Leave of Absences Policy (now called the Supportive Leaves Policy).[1] [2]

The following year, she was elected to the Governing Council as an Undergraduate Student Governor (Constituency II).[3] There, her continued advocacy with regards to mental health policy was one of several reasons that the University introduced voluntary leave policies for all students (previously voluntary leave had only been available to international students in extenuating circumstances).

She returned to the UTSU for the summer of 2023, where she identified that its recent governance restructuring put it in violation of the 2015 Associate Membership Agreement Between EngSoc and the UTSU. When UTSU leadership was dismissive, she left the organization and prepared a report for EngSoc.[4] This report led to a renegotiated agreement, which went into effect in 2025.

For her behind-the-scenes contributions to student governance she was awarded the UTSU Professional Faculties Leadership Scholarship and the University of Toronto Student Leadership Award.[5]
