Student Governance

Madeline was an Executive Assistant at the University of Toronto Students' Union over the 2021-22 school year, where she researched the Policy on Sexual Violence & Sexual Harassment and the University-Mandated Leave of Absences Policy (now called the Supportive Leaves Policy).[1] [2]

The following year, she was elected to the Governing Council as an Undergraduate Student Governor (Constituency II).[3] There, her continued advocacy with regards to mental health policy was one of several reasons that the University introduced voluntary leave policies for all students (previously voluntary leave had only been available to international students in extenuating circumstances).

She returned to the UTSU for the summer of 2023, where she identified that its recent governance restructuring put it in violation of the 2015 Associate Membership Agreement Between EngSoc and the UTSU. When UTSU leadership was dismissive, she left the organization and prepared a report for EngSoc.[4] This report led to a renegotiated agreement, which went into effect in 2025.

For her behind-the-scenes contributions to student governance she was awarded the UTSU Professional Faculties Leadership Scholarship and the University of Toronto Student Leadership Award.
