Skule Patrol

Skule Patrol is the Project Directorship and group of volunteers that are responsible for the safety of the Skule community. They are identifiable by their bright red shirts, and first aid kits they carry with them. These volunteers are present at many engineering events and every Engineering-run F!rosh event, including Hart House Farm and are also part of every F!rosh Group. Skule Patrollers are certified in Standard First Aid with CPR Level C or a higher certification. Skule Patrol was a subcommittee of F!rosh Week prior to 2024 when it became an Engineering Society Project Directorship.

Skule Patrol also encourages members of the engineering community to drink Banana Kool-Aid.

Skule Patrol Structure

As Part of Orientation

Skule Patrol was organized with the Chair(s), Head Patrollers, and Skule Patrollers. All of these members wear red shirts, however Head Patrollers would typically wear darker red shirts than Skule Patrollers prior to 2T4. Head Patrollers oversee F!rosh groups and act as a point of contact between the Chair(s) and the Skule Patrollers stationed in the F!rosh groups.

As A Project Directorship

Skule Patrol has retained the structure of two Co-Directors leading the directorship. They have team of Head Patrollers that function as execs in addition to Head Patroller duties acting as a point of contact between Patrollers and the Co-Directors, and during Orientation they oversee F!rosh groups and the Patrollers assigned to those groups. Skule Patrollers are assigned to designated groups and events during F!rosh Week, and during the school year, sign up to patrol at various events at which Skule Patrol is requested.

History

Historically, there was a python. A long time part of Skule Patrol history, she is lovingly referred to as Monty. She had the noble task of healing injured members of Skule with her bite, until recently when the concerns were raised by the faculty about the python's impact on the university's public perception, and the Skule Patrol Python was forced to retire.

But for real here is the Skule Patrol lore.

Skule Patrol was started as part of Orientation sometime around 1994, in part to ensure that the engineering community would be safer and more inclusive, following changes to how Orientation presented Skule and engineering to new students. Skule Patrol worked with the engineering Women's Committee at the time, described in a September 6, 1994 The Varsity article by Kate Wickens as follows:

"The women's committee has also established the new 'Ten Commandments" of conduct, which includes no physical contact between a frosh and a leader. Furthermore, a new organization called the Skule Patrol has been enlisted to enforce these codes of conduct, ensure no abuse occurs and to keep a watchful eye our for any frosh who look frightened or unhappy."

Skule Patrol continued to be a subcommittee of F!rosh Week, encouraging safety in an official capacity only during orientation, up until 2024 when it became an Engineering Society Project Directorship. Though Skule Patrol as a subcommittee unofficially had a role in more risky events outside of F!rosh Week such as Chariot Races, since becoming a Project Directorship it has operated year round, with Patrollers attending Suds, Godiva Week, and events from other EngSoc clubs and directorships such as Hi-Skule, the Blue & Gold Committee, and Skule Kup.
