Cannonball is one of the annual semi-formals held by the Engineering Society. It is traditionally held during the winter term at the conclusion of [[Godiva Week]]. It is a celebration of Skule™ spirit, and is named after the mascot of Skule, the mighty [[Skule™ Cannon]].

The [[Lady Godiva Memorial Bnad]] and the Skule Cannon both make appearances at Cannonball. The LGMB, in particular, uses Cannonball to celebrate the selection of its new Baby [[Bnad Leedur]] and [[D(r)umb Majur(k)|D(r)umb Miner]].

In addition, [[Mr. Blue & Gold]] and [[Godiva's Crown]], whom are both selected during Godiva Week, share the ceremonial first dance at Cannonball to celebrate their new titles.

== History ==
"It was at [the] Ajax [campus], where social affairs were such a centrepiece, that students held the first Engineers' Ball, an event that, renamed the Cannon Ball in 1955, turned into an enduring annual tradition."

Cannonball (back then "Cannon Ball") used to be referred to as the "Ball of the Fall", since it was held during the fall term, generally at Hart House. It had existed for some time in addition to the Skule/School At-Home, which was historically the primary dinner dance for the school year, held during the winter term (oftentimes at the Royal York Hotel). By the mid-1970s, however, the At-Home disappeared and Cannonball was moved to the winter term, becoming *the* focal dinner dance of the school year.

Every year, each incoming class of F!rosh at the end of their first year has the privilege of painting a mural (usually following a particular theme) onto a designated wall in [[Sandford Fleming Atrium|the Pit]]. The First Year chair is normally responsible for overseeing the completion of the mural.

||Legend has it that the class of 2T0 designed their mural based on a meme from preparing for F!rosh Week 1T7, in which many students suggested that 1T7's F!rosh Week should be Egg-Themed. The suggestion was ultimately rejected, however relics of this tale remain in the Year Wall, as well as the informal nickname, 2TEgg. In the 2019 Summer semester, the mural was redone to improve the overall aesthetic of the design.

The '''Engineering Stores''', known to students as Stores, is [[Skule]]™'s very own book and clothing store located in the basement of the [[Sandford Fleming Building]]. Stores is open throughout the academic year and sells first-year textbooks, leather jackets, coveralls, and a variety of patches and clothing on behalf of student groups. Since 2010, first-year students can also pre-order textbooks from Engineering Stores website, [http://stores.skule.ca stores.skule.ca] . As one of the non-profit commercial operations run by the Engineering Society, Stores is managed and operated completely by students.

[[Leather jackets]] are exclusively ordered through Stores, once in the fall semester and once in the winter semester. Out of tradition, students do not purchase their leather jacket until the beginning of their second year, as many students may change disciplines or even faculties after first year. Students typically adorn their jackets with their year and discipline, a common phrase such as 'SKULE', '[[SPS]]', or '[[Engineers Rule the World|ERTW]]', and patches of the various organizations which they are involved in. Starting in the 2008-2009 year, 'E4TW' (Engineers For the World) began to appear on leather jackets, as students preferred to focus on the responsibilities engineers have to the world. The abbreviation originates in a marketing campaign by the Division of Engineering Science and appeared on a prominent banner hung outside the [[Bahen Centre for Information Technology|Bahen Centre]].

[[Coveralls]] are typically purchased by students in April of the first year. Coveralls provide an excellent way for Skule™ students to show their Skule™ spirit while giving them an item of clothing to get dirty in during practical activities. Coverall decorations can vary greatly from student to student, from the simple addition of sewn patches to elaborate designs made with anything for paint to electronics.

==History==

From the early days of the Engineering Society, technical papers outlining novel research performed at SPS were presented at the academic session of Society's fortnightly meetings. Copies of the papers were exchanged with other technical societies and university libraries, providing content for an Engineering Society Library, which formed the only library SPS had for many years.

The origins of the Engineering Stores (initially referred to as "The Supplies Department") are closely associated with the Society's early publishing ventures. In its earliest manifestation, Stores was "a small room where all books and papers, the property of the Society, were kept". By 1908, a permanent secretary was designated to buy and sell goods through the Supplies Department. This operation was cleaved from the library in time, moved to Room 19 of the SPS building and renamed Engineering Stores.
