The Professional Experience Year, otherwise known as PEY, is an optional co-op program in which current undergraduate students can undertake a 12 to 16 month work term after their 2nd or 3rd year of their education. For the duration of this period, students are working as full-time employees and earning salaries, while gaining valuable experience in the field. While working, students are able to retain full-time student status at the university, and can apply to retain interest-free status on student loans if they have any. The Engineering Career Centre manages the program and is the point of contact between students/employers and the university.

Engineering Students
Many engineers choose to go on PEY for the salary and the experience that they gain; however, they are not considered active students during that year. As such, they must have their graduating year pushed forward according to the length of their work term. Students on PEY can add '+ PEY' to the end of their discipline and year; this is a widespread practice to signify which students will graduate a year late.

Many local and international companies offer jobs to UofT students for PEY. Well-known brands include Apple, Tesla, Proctor & Gamble, IBM, BMW, Shell, and Microsoft.

The Great Impeachment of 2020 or PEYGate
In 2020, the engineering faculty decided to introduce a new PEY and ESIP program that will increase fees, expand the Engineering Career Centre (ECC), and have more required modules. Many students were opposed to these changes as they had already seen the ECC as a poorly run organization and did not want to pay more fees to expand a poorly functioning organization. The EngSoc President, Christopher Kousinioris, was elected in the spring of 2020 with a promise to fight these changes as much as possible.

In late October of the same year, Kousinioris notified the Skule community via a Facebook post in the Skule Facebook page that he had voted in favour of the new changes. This caused much outrage among the students who had felt blindsided by this late annoucement. Some students, known as Team Chaos, started a social media campaign to recall the president for his actions in the upcoming regularly scheduled "Officers Accountability Meeting." A vote for recall (informally known as impeachment) requires a two-thirds majority according to EngSoc bylaws.

During the meeting, which was held online due to the Covid-19 pandemic, hundreds of current students and alumni were present. After several hours of students asking question to Kousinioris, a vote for recall was performed. The first vote had a result of 65% of students voting to recall; just shy of the required two-thirds. However, this vote did not have proxy votes properly counted so a revote occured. During this second vote with proxy votes properly counting, 63% voted to recall; still short of the required number for a recall. After this vote, one student commented, "Nixon had a higher approval rating." Some criticism materialized as a few students already left after the results of the first vote were announced and were not aware that a second vote would occur. During the rest of the meeting, no other officers were recalled; all had safer voting margins than the president received.

To many students, this was the most excitement and drama they experienced during the fall semester of 2020. Those students are recommended to try sky diving, snowboarding, or sexting to get more excitement in their lives.

Structure and Design
The Bahen Centre was built on the site of several historic buildings south of Russell Street, and adjacent to the preexisting Koffler Student Centre, whose exterior brick wall became an interior feature of the new building. One of the historic buildings (44 St. George Street) was to be moved to a new location, but was instead incorporated into the design by the architects.

The facility is 20,000 gross square metres and has been praised for its sustainability in design. Many elements of the Bahen Centre contribute its overall sustainability. The building uses excess steam from the neighbouring U of T steam plant to provide 92% of its total heating needs and sun-shading devices along both the east and south sides of the building reduce the amount of cooling needed during the summer months. In addition, careful space planning allows for the labs of the computer science and Electrical and Computer Engineering departments to face the coolest wall (north) to provide relief from the heat created by the large numbers of computers.

History
The Bahen Centre was constructed to meet the growing needs of the university's computer science and electrical and computer engineering programs, as the university doubled the size and funding of the programs. The building is named after engineer John Bahen (Civ 5T4), former president of Kiewit Corporation, who made a significant gift to support the project. Other sources of private funding included Jeffrey Skoll, the engineering class of 4T5, and companies including Nortel Networks, Bell Canada, and Motorola, who have named research labs in the building.

The facility contains 50 laboratories, 10 lecture theatres, 13 tutorial rooms, 9 seminar rooms, and about 300 offices. The building was officially opened on October 8, 2002, after opening in the summer of 2002. The sixth floor, however, was finished only in August 2005 and the Department of Mathematics (and the Mathematics Library) moved in.

In Popular Culture
In 2013, University of Toronto instructor Shai Cohen performed a tour of Bahen Centre highlighting all the reasons of why Bahen is a poorly designed building. It was not until the completion of the Myhal Centre for Engineering Innovation and Entrepreneurship that the award for most poorly designed engineering building finally had competition again.

Awards and Accolades
}}
The Bahen Centre for Information Technology, located on 40 St. George Street, was completed in 2002 and serves as a "state of the art facility for education of information technology professionals in electrical and computer engineering, computer science and IT research." It was constructed at a cost of $111 million, and was designed by Diamond + Schmitt Architects Incorporated. The building is home to the Division of Engineering Science and is adjoined to the Koffler Centre on the south, which houses the U of T Bookstore and U of T Career Centre, and 44 St. George St. on the north, a historic house-like building that currently contains the Office of the Dean (and formerly the Professional Experience Year office). It also houses computer labs for the computer science and ECE departments.

Departments and Offices
* Division of Engineering Science (BA2110)
* Office of the Dean (44 St. George Street)
* Adel Sedra Auditorium (BA1160)

Notable Laboratories
* Advanced Surface Coatings Laboratory
* Bell University Laboratories
* Dynamics Graphics Project
* Emerging Communications Technology Institute
* Reconfigurable Antennas Laboratory (BA8177)

Dean Yip is a leading scholar in the field of single-molecule biophysics and a faculty member with the Department of Chemical Engineering & Applied Chemistry, the Department of Biochemistry and the Institute of Biomaterials and Biomedical Engineering. He is a Principal Investigator with the Donnelly Centre for Cellular & Biomolecular Research at the University of Toronto.
As a former director of the Institute of Biomaterials & Biomedical Engineering (IBBME), he provided leadership to more than 100 research engineers and scientists engaged in discovery and product development in the areas of neuroscience and sensory stimulation, biomaterials and tissue engineering, molecular systems biology and nanotechnology, as well as medical device and drug delivery system design.
He has been a strong advocate and creator of international research opportunities for students and scholars. Through the Wildcat Voyager Scholarships, IBBME encourages its PhD students by providing funds for international research partnerships. Professor Yip and IBBME have also played important roles in the development and implementation of the Lyon Sachs Collaborative Research Fund. This fund rapidly scales up research collaborations by enabling joint symposia and workshops, funding student and faculty travel between Haifa and Toronto, and enabling sabbatical visits and short-term graduate student exchanges. The fund has sparked cutting-edge research and enabled two-way flow of immense talent between the Technion Institute of Technology and the University of Toronto.

Awards & Distinctions
Dean Yip is the Vice Chair of the CIHR Institute of Genetics Advisory Board and has served on grant panels at NSERC, CIHR and NIH. He was the first recipient of the Molecular Imaging’s Outstanding Young Biological Scanning Probe Microscopy Investigator of the Year award, and since that time has been honoured with a Premier’s Research Excellence Award (1999), Faculty Teaching Award, (2000) and Graduate Faculty Teaching Award for Sustained Contribution to Excellence in Graduate Teaching (2008). He was named a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (2009), a Fellow of the Engineering Institute of Canada (2014) and held a Tier II Canada Research Chair in Molecular Imaging (2000-2010).
school and elementary students opportunities to learn more about engineering. Hi-Skule have the
great and diverse pool of dedicated Hi-Skule mentors who are living the life and experiencing what
might be of doubt to grade 12 student. Hi-Skule runs events such as PreF!rosh, UofT High School
Design Competition and the Engineering Mentorship Coffeehouses to bring about a friendly
atmosphere for high school students to experience hands on activities, get a sense of who
engineers really are and at the same time chat about engineering life with the mentors and have
some fun.

Vision
The main values of Hi-Skule are to reach out to many students and engineering enthusiasts and present them with resources about engineering and breaking stereotypes of engineering life, to share the Skule experiences and to provide current engineering students the opportunity of being trained as a mentor to make positive impacts among the prospective engineering students.

The audience of Hi-Skule initiative events includes students from grades 5 to 12. The following are the events for the 1T6-1T7 year:
